Британские политические и государственные деятели второй половины XIX в.
Асквит, Герберт Генри, граф Оксфорд (1852–1928 гг.) – английский государственный деятель, либерал. 1892–1895 гг. – министр внутренних дел; 1905–1908 гг. – канцлер казначейства; 1908–1916 гг. – премьер-министр. На выборах в палату общин в 1924 г. Асквит потерпел поражение. Впоследствии состоял членом палаты лордов.
Бальфур, Артур Джеймс (1848–1930 гг.) – английский государственный деятель, консерватор. С 1874 г. член палаты общин от консервативной партии. На Берлинском конгрессе 1878 г. выполнял функции секретаря при своем дяде, министре иностранных дел лорде Солсбери; 1886 г. – министр по делам Шотландии; 1887–1891 гг. – министр по делам Ирландии; 1891 г. – первый лорд казначейства и лидер палаты общин; с 1902 г. – премьер-министр и глава консервативной партии. Был одним из инициаторов англо-японского союза (1902 г.), положившего конец политике "блестящей изоляции"; добился заключения союза Англии с Францией – основы антигерманской коалиции. В конце 1905 г. вышел в отставку. В ноябре 1911 г. вынужден был оставить пост лидера консервативной партии. Во время Первой мировой войны вошел в коалиционное правительство, заняв пост морского министра. 1916–1919 гг. – министр иностранных дел; 1921–1928 гг. – президент Британской академии.
