At the sweet smell of the roasting corn came the starving neighbors, crowding at the door, and crying: "O Kahp-too-óo-yoo! Give us to taste one grain of corn, and then we will go home and die."
But Kahp-too-óo-yoo handed to each an ear, and said:
"Fathers, brothers, go now to your own houses, for there you will find com as much as here." And when they went, it was so. All began to roast corn and to eat; and the dead in the houses awoke and were strong again, and all the village sang and danced.

At the beginning of things (на заре мира: «в начале всех вещей»), He-who-was-first-Created (Тот-кто-был-первым-Сотворен = Созданный Первым) found himself living alone (обнаружил себя живущим в одиночку = понял, что существует один). The earth was here before him (земля была здесь перед ним), clothed in green grass and thick forests (одетая зеленой травой и густыми лесами), and peopled with the animal tribes (и заселенная стадами животных; to people — заселять, населять; tribe — племя; клан, род; семейство; поколение). For many moons He-who-was-first-Created remained thus, until at last he beheld two huge forms rising up in the midst of the waves. "Husband (муж /мой/)!" exclaimed the wife (воскликнула жена) of Unk-tay-hee, "for ages this has been our resting-place (целую вечность это было нашим местом отдыха; for ages — целую вечность; to rest — покоиться; отдыхать), and yet I have never seen this tree before (но, однако, я никогда не видела этого дерева раньше)!"
"Woman (женщина/жена), the tree has always been there (дерево всегда было здесь)!" returned the water monster (возразило/ответило водяное чудище).
"But I am sure (но я уверена) it was not here before (его не было здесь раньше)," she insisted (настаивала она).

Then Unk-tay-hee wound his immense scaly tail (тогда Унк-тэй-хи обвил свой огромный/громадный чешуйчатый хвост; to wind; scale — чешуйка) about the giant pine (вокруг гигантской сосны) and tried to pull it out by the roots (и попытался вытащить ее у корней). The water foamed and boiled with his struggles (вода вспенилась и вскипела от его усилий), but He-who-was-first-Created stood firm (но Созданный Первым стоял крепко; to stand), and at last the monster gave up the attempt (и в конце концов чудище бросило попытку = сдалось; to give up — сдаться).
"There (вот)," he declared (он объявил), "I told you it had always been there (я сказал тебе, оно всегда было здесь)!" His wife appeared satisfied (казалось, его жена была удовлетворена; to appear — /по/казаться; to satisfy — удовлетворять), and presently the gentle waves (и постепенно спокойные волны) rocked them both to sleep (укачали обоих до сна; to rock to sleep — укачать, убаюкать).

Then Unk-tay-hee wound his immense scaly tail about the giant pine and tried to pull it out by the roots. The water foamed and boiled with his struggles, but He-who-was-first-Created stood firm, and at last the monster gave up the attempt.
"There," he declared, "I told you it had always been there!" His wife appeared satisfied, and presently the gentle waves rocked them both to sleep.
Then He-who-was-first-Created returned to his own shape (Созданный Первым вернулся в свое тело; shape — форма, очертание), and with his long spear (и длинным копьем) he stabbed each of the monsters (он ударил каждого из чудищ), so that with groans of pain (так что, стеная от боли: «со стонами боли») they dove down to their homes (они метнулись вниз к себе домой; to dive — нырять, погружаться) at the bottom of the great lake (на дно огромного озера), and the waters boiled above them (и воды вскипели над ними), and the foam was red with their blood (и пена была красна от их крови).

Then He-who-was-first-Created returned to his own shape, and with his long spear he stabbed each of the monsters, so that with groans of pain they dove down to their homes at the bottom of the great lake, and the waters boiled above them, and the foam was red with their blood.
The Daughter of the Sun (Дочь Солнца)
The Sun lived on the other side of the sky vault (Солнце жила на противоположном/другом конце небесного свода; other — другой, иной; другой/из двух/; side — сторона, бок, край), but her daughter lived in the middle of the sky (но ее дочь жила в середине неба; солнце в этом мифе предстает в виде женщины, поэтому в дальнейшем к нему относятся местоимения she — она, her — ее; Солнце здесь рассматривается как женское имя) , directly above the earth (прямо над землей), and every day (и каждый день) as the Sun was climbing along the sky arch to the west (когда Солнце двигалась/взбиралась по небесной арке на запад; along — вдоль) she used to stop at her daughter's house for dinner (она обыкновенно останавливалась: «она имела обыкновение останавливаться» в доме своей дочери отобедать: «для обеда»).

She said to her brother, the Moon (она сказала своему брату, Месяцу), "My grandchildren are ugly (мои внуки некрасивы/уродливы); they grin all over their faces (они оскаливаются во все лицо; to grin — скалить зубы; осклабиться; ухмыляться /at/) when they look at me (когда они смотрят на меня)." But the Moon said (но Месяц ответил), "I like my younger brothers (мне нравятся мои младшие братья); I think they are very handsome (я думаю, они очень красивы)"—because they always smiled pleasantly (потому что они всегда улыбались радостно) when they saw him in the sky at night (когда видели его на небе ночью), for his rays were milder (ведь его лучи были мягче/нежнее; mild — мягкий, нежный).

The Sun was jealous and planned to kill all the people, so every day when she got near her daughter's house she sent down such sultry rays that there was a great fever and the people died by hundreds, until everyone had lost some friend and there was fear that no one would be left. They went for help to the Little Men, who said the only way to save themselves was to kill the Sun.
The Little Men made medicine (Маленькие Человечки приготовили снадобье) and changed two men to snakes (и превратили двух людей в змей), the Spreading-adder (/в/ Кидающуюся Гадюку; to spread — развертывать/ся/; раскидывать/ся/) and the Copperhead (и /в/ Медноголовую Змею), and sent them to watch (и послали их стеречь; to watch — /внимательно/ наблюдать, следить; караулить; сторожить, охранять; присматривать; to send) near the door of the daughter of the Sun (возле двери дочери Солнца) to bite the old Sun (чтобы укусить старуху-Солнце) when she came next day (когда она придет на следующий день). They went together and hid near the house (они отправились вместе и спрятались возле дома; to hide) until the Sun came (пока не пришла Солнце), but when the Spreading-adder was about to spring (но когда Кидающаяся Гадюка собирался прыгнуть), the bright light blinded him (яркий свет ослепил его; здесь имеется в виду мужчина в образе змеи, поэтому Кидающаяся Гадюка и другие — мужские/индейские/ имена) and he could only spit out yellow slime (и он смог лишь выплюнуть желтую слизь; to spit out), as he does to this day (как делает и сейчас: «до сего дня») when he tries to bite (когда пытается укусить). She called him a nasty thing (она = Солнце обозвала его мерзкой тварью) and went by into the house (и прошла мимо в дом; to go by), and the Copperhead crawled off without trying to do anything (и Медноголовая Змея уполз, не попытавшись ничего сделать; without — без).
