Chapter 1: About Houses
This happened in a small town very far away. Many houses were in this town. On the roofs of these houses, there were chimneys which breathed out gray smoke. Inside the houses, people stoked the fire in their stoves. Every house had a door to enter and windows to look out through at the street and at people passing by.
Эта история произошла в маленьком городе далеко-далеко отсюда. В этом городе было много домов. На крышах домов виднелись кирпичные трубы, из которых постоянно шел серый дым. В домах топили печи и горел огонь. У каждого дома была дверь, в которую можно было войти. И окна, из которых можно было смотреть на улицу, на проходящих мимо людей.
Also, there was a house without a chimney. Nor did it have a stove or windows. It only had a small door, always locked with a large metal padlock.
Но среди всех домов стоял один дом, у которого не было трубы. Не было и печки внутри дома. Не было у этого дома и окон. Была только одна маленькая дверь, всегда запертая на большой железный замок.
Nobody knew who lived in this house. But dreadful rumors spread. Some said an old witch, who lived in this house, tortured the town with her dark magic. Some said bandits lived there. Others thought it was haunted by a ghost who scared anyone attempting to enter.
Кто же жил в этом доме? Никто этого не знал, но было много страшных домыслов и слухов. Говорили, что в этом доме живет старая колдунья, которая творит злодейства в городе. Кто-то говорил, что там живут разбойники. А кто-то думал, что в этом доме обитает привидение и пугает всех, кто захочет туда зайти.
But our story begins someplace else. It begins in a house with a chimney, windows, and a big beautiful door. In this house, a small girl named Anna lived with her parrot Pretzel, and, of course, her parents.
Но сейчас мы с вами переместимся совсем в другой дом. С трубой и с окнами, и с большой красивой дверью. В этом доме жила маленькая девочка по имени Аня вместе со своим попугаем Кренделем. Конечно, там жили и ее родители.
Anna went to school, she studied well, making her parents and her parrot Pretzel very happy. Only Pretzel would not speak, even though Anna taught him every day.
Аня ходила в школу, получала пятерки и очень радовала своих родителей. А также своего попугая Кренделя. Вот только Крендель никак не хотел разговаривать, хотя Аня учила его каждый день.
Chapter 2: About the Mystery
It was an ordinary day, and all children were at school. A break time had just begun, and several kids went aside. They discussed something quietly. Anna wondered what they were whispering about. She approached them, but once they noticed her, they immediately stopped talking.
Был обычный день и все ребята учились в школе. Началась перемена и несколько человек отошли в сторонку. Они начали что-то тихо обсуждать. Ане стало очень интересно, о чем шепчутся ребята. Она подошла к ним, но как только ее заметили все замолчали.
Do you want something, Anna? asked Bobby, the noisiest boy in the class. Yet, he could be remarkably quiet and still when planning a new trick with his friends.
Ты что-то хотела, Аня? спросил Вова, самый задиристый и шумный мальчик во всем классе. Поразительно, как тихо он себя вел, когда замышлял что-нибудь с друзьями.
Yes, Anna replied, Id like to know what you are chatting about.
Да, ответила Аня, я хочу узнать, о чем вы разговариваете.
Its a secret, said Bobby.
Это секрет сказал Вова.
But I wont tell anybody! Anna promised.
Но я никому не расскажу! пообещала Аня.
Well, I believe you, but only those, who are in the secret can know the secret.
Хорошо, я тебе верю, но о секрете знают только те, кто участвуют в нем.
What does that mean? Anna wondered.
It means, this time, Charlie replied, a good pupil who sat in the first row in the classroom, that this is a very dangerous expedition!
Что это значит? удивилась Аня.
А это значит, на этот раз заговорил Дима. Он всегда получал только пятерки и сидел на первой парте, что это очень опасная экспедиция!
Bobbys stare made Charlie silent.
Who told you to say all this? OK, he said to Anna. Well tell you the secret. But then youll go with us. And youll never say a word to anyone about what were going to do.
Вова пристально посмотрел на Диму и жестом заставил его замолчать.
Ну кто тебя просил это рассказывать? Хорошо, обратился он к Ане, мы тебе расскажем. Но в таком случае ты пойдешь с нами. И никому и никогда не расскажешь ни единого слова о том, что мы замышляем.
All right, Anna eplied immediately.
Were going to the abandoned house to find out who lives there. And, possibly, even catch them.
Хорошо, сразу ответила Аня.
Мы собираемся отправиться к заброшенному дому и
узнать наконец-то, кто там живет. А если удастся и поймать его.
But our parents strictly forbid us from walking near this house! said Anna.
So, dont tell them, replied Bobby.
Но ведь родители нам строго настрого запретили гулять возле этого дома! сказала Аня.
А ты им не рассказывай ответил Вова.
Chapter 3: About the Scary House
Later that evening, the children headed to the scary house and broke their parents order not to leave the yard. Anna went with them, too.
Этим же вечером ребята отправились к страшному дому. Они вышли из своего двора, нарушив указание родителей. Аня тоже была с ними.
When they finally came, it became really scary. Crows were circling around the roof of the house, the sun hid behind a large black and grim cloud.
Когда они подошли к одинокому дому без окон, стало совсем страшно. Над ним летали черные вороны, а солнце спряталось за огромную мрачную тучу.
Several kids had already abandoned the expedition along the way and hurried home. But Bobby, as the oldest, knew that they were just afraid.
По дороге от всей экспедиции уже отстало несколько ребят. Они по каким-то причинам заторопились домой, но Вова, как самый старший, понимал, что они просто испугались.
So, Bobby broke the silence, lets go in?
Only three of them dared to come this far: Bobby, Anna and Charlie.
Id rather wait for you right here, said Charile.
Ну что, заговорил он, заходим?
Ребят осталось только трое: Вова, Аня и Дима. Дима проговорил:
Я, наверное, подожду вас тут.
Bobby and Anna looked at each other and stepped closer to the door. Bobby lifted his arm and pulled the door by the padlock. It was locked.
Then Anna knocked three times on the door with her fist. The padlock clicked and the door squeaked half-open.
Looks like were expected, Bobby said.
Вова и Аня посмотрели друг на друга и подошли ближе к двери. Вова поднял руку и дернул дверь за огромный железный замок. Дверь была заперта. Тогда Аня три раза стукнула по двери кулаком. После этого замок щелкнул и дверь со скрипом приоткрылась.
Кажется, нас ждут, проговорил Вова.
They entered, and the door instantly slammed behind them. In the middle of the room, they saw a high armchair with its back turned to them. It stood beside a fireplace, but, strangely, the house did not have a chimney. Somebody was sitting in the chair, unseen behind the back of the armchair. The children could see only the tip of a long nose.
Ребята зашли внутрь. Как только они переступили порог, дверь со скрипом захлопнулась. Посередине комнаты стояло высокое кресло. Оно было повернуто спиной к ребятам. Напротив него горел огонь в камине. Что было странно, так как трубы у дома не было. В кресле кто-то сидел. Ребята не могли видеть, кто же скрывался за спинкой кресла. Из-за спинки торчал лишь кончик длинного носа.
What do you want? a cracking voice said.
The children did not know what to say. All of a sudden, the man turned in his chair. Anna and Bobby saw an old man with a big nose. He eyed them with anger.
Что вам тут нужно? раздался хриплый голос.
Ребята потеряли дар речи и стояли молча. Неожиданно, сидящий в кресле человек обернулся. Аня и Вова увидели старика с огромным носом. Его взгляд был полон злобы.
You have bothered me! You will have to pay for it.
He waved his hand, and everything in the room started flying and jumping around. Tables, chairs and commodes went whirling in the air. Mice, bugs and beetles left their holes and began squeaking and ringing. Every single thing was flying with monstrous speed, so the kids could not find a place to stand. They rushed to and fro.
