without [wI'DaVt] sweet-scented ["swi:t'sentId] briar ['braIq]

thorn [TO:n] encompass [In'kAmpqs] nettle [netl] thistle ['TIs(q)l]

distress [dIs'tres]

And the Star-Child went out of the gate of the city, and came to the wood of which the Magician had spoken to him.

Now this wood was very fair to look at from without, and seemed full of singing birds and of sweet-scented flowers, and the Star-Child entered it gladly. Yet did its beauty profit him little, for wherever he went harsh briars and thorns shot up from the ground and encompassed him, and evil nettles stung him, and the thistle pierced him with her daggers, so that he was in sore distress. Nor could he anywhere find the piece of white gold of which the Magician had spoken, though he sought for it from morn to noon, and from noon to sunset. And at sunset he set his face towards home, weeping bitterly, for he knew what fate was in store for him.

But when he had reached (но, когда он достиг; to reach — протягивать; достигать /места назначения/) the outskirts of the wood (опушки леса; outskirt — окраина, предместье, опушка леса), he heard from a thicket (он услышал /доносящийся/ из чащи; to hear (heard)) a cry as of some one in pain (страдальческий крик: «словно крик кого-то, испытывающего боль»). And forgetting his own sorrow (и, забывая о своей собственной печали) he ran back to the place (он побежал к тому самому месту /откуда доносился крик/), and saw there a little Hare (и увидел там маленького Зайчика) caught in a trap (попавшего в капкан; to catch (caught)) that some hunter had set for it (расставленный каким-то охотником: «который какой-то охотник расставил на /зайца/»).

cry [kraI] sorrow ['sOrqV] hare [heq] caught [kO:t] hunter ['hAntq]

But when he had reached the outskirts of the wood, he heard from a thicket a cry as of some one in pain. And forgetting his own sorrow he ran back to the place, and saw there a little Hare caught in a trap that some hunter had set for it.

And the Star-Child had pity on it (и Звездный Мальчик пожалел его), and released it (и освободил его), and said to it, 'I am myself but a slave (я сам всего лишь раб), yet may I give thee thy freedom (но все же я могу дать тебе /твою/ свободу).'

And the Hare answered him (и Зайчик ответил ему), and said: 'Surely thou hast given me freedom (несомненно, ты дал мне свободу; thou hast = you have), and what shall I give thee in return (а что же мне отдать тебе взамен; return — возвращение; отдача, возврат)?'

And the Star-Child said to it (и Звездный Мальчик сказал ему), 'I am seeking for a piece of white gold (я ищу монету из белого золота), nor can I anywhere find it (и я нигде не могу ее найти), and if I bring it not to my master (и если я не принесу ее своему хозяину) he will beat me (он побьет меня).'

pity ['pItI] release [rI'li:s] freedom ['fri:dqm] return [rI'tq:n]

And the Star-Child had pity on it, and released it, and said to it, 'I am myself but a slave, yet may I give thee thy freedom.'

And the Hare answered him, and said: 'Surely thou hast given me freedom, and what shall I give thee in return?'

And the Star-Child said to it, 'I am seeking for a piece of white gold, nor can I anywhere find it, and if I bring it not to my master he will beat me.'

'Come thou with me (пойдем со мной),' said the Hare, 'and I will lead thee to it (и я отведу тебя к ней), for I know where it is hidden (потому что я знаю, где она спрятана; to hide (hid, hidden) — прятать), and for what purpose (и для чего: «и для какой цели»; purpose — цель, намерение).'

So the Star-Child went with the Hare (тогда Звездный Мальчик пошел с Зайчиком), and lo (и, смотри-ка)! in the cleft of a great oak-tree (в трещине огромного дуба) he saw the piece of white gold (он увидел монету из белого золота) that he was seeking (которую он искал). And he was filled with joy (и он был переполнен радостью), and seized it (и схватил ее), and said to the Hare, 'The service that I did to thee (ту услугу, которую я оказал тебе; service — услужение; услуга, одолжение) thou hast rendered back again many times over (ты оплатил мне много-много раз; to render — воздавать, платить; time — время; раз, крат), and the kindness that I showed thee (и за ту доброту, которую я проявил к тебе) thou hast repaid a hundred-fold (ты отплатил мне стократ; to pay (paid) — платить, заплатить).'

lead [li:d] hidden [hIdn] purpose ['pq:pqs] cleft [kleft] seize [si:z]

service ['sq:vIs] render ['rendq] repaid [rI'peId]

'Come thou with me,' said the Hare, 'and I will lead thee to it, for I know where it is hidden, and for what purpose.'

So the Star-Child went with the Hare, and lo! in the cleft of a great oak-tree he saw the piece of white gold that he was seeking. And he was filled with joy, and seized it, and said to the Hare, 'The service that I did to thee thou hast rendered back again many times over, and the kindness that I showed thee thou hast repaid a hundred-fold.'

'Nay (нет),' answered the Hare (ответил Зайчик), 'but as thou dealt with me (как ты обошелся со мной; to deal (dealt) — распределять; обходиться, обращаться), so I did deal with thee (так и я поступил с тобою),' and it ran away swiftly (и он быстро убежал), and the Star-Child went towards the city (и Звездный Мальчик пошел к городу).

Now at the gate of the city (а у ворот города) there was seated one who was a leper (сидел один прокаженный: «сидел один /человек/, который был прокаженный»; to seat — сажать, усаживать). Over his face hung a cowl of grey linen (на его лице был: «висел» колпак/капюшон из небеленого: «серого» холста; to hung — вешать, висеть), and through the eyelets (и сквозь отверстия для глаз; eyelet — ушко; небольшое отверстие, дырочка) his eyes gleamed (светились/блестели его глаза) like red coals (похожие на красные угольки). And when he saw the Star-Child coming (и когда он увидел, что идет Звездный Мальчик), he struck upon a wooden bowl (он ударил по деревянной чаше; to strike (struck, stricken) — ударять, бить), and clattered his bell (и загремел своим колокольчиком; to clatter — стучать, греметь), and called out to him (и окликнул его), and said, 'Give me a piece of money (дай мне монету; piece — кусок; монета (тж. a piece of money), money — деньги), or I must die of hunger (или я умру от голода: «или я должен умереть от голода»). For they have thrust me out of the city (потому что они вытолкали меня из города; to thrust (thrust) — толкать, тыкать), and there is no one (и нет никого) who has pity on me (кто сжалился надо мной).'

swiftly ['swIftlI] towards [tq'wO:dz] leper ['lepq] coal [kqVl]

clatter ['klxtq] die [daI] thrust [TrAst]

'Nay,' answered the Hare, 'but as thou dealt with me, so I did deal with thee,' and it ran away swiftly, and the Star-Child went towards the city.

Now at the gate of the city there was seated one who was a leper. Over his face hung a cowl of grey linen, and through the eyelets his eyes gleamed like red coals. And when he saw the Star-Child coming, he struck upon a wooden bowl, and clattered his bell, and called out to him, and said, 'Give me a piece of money, or I must die of hunger. For they have thrust me out of the city, and there is no one who has pity on me.'

'Alas (увы)!' cried the Star-Child, 'I have but one piece of money (у меня всего одна монета) in my wallet (в /моей/ котомке: «бумажнике»), and if I bring it not to my master (и если я не принесу ее моему хозяину) he will beat me (он побьет меня), for I am his slave (потому что я его раб).'

But the leper entreated him (но прокаженный умолял его), and prayed of him (и очень его просил), till the Star-Child had pity (пока Звездный Мальчик не сжалился над ним; pity — жалость, сострадание), and gave him the piece of white gold (и не отдал ему монету из белого золота).

wallet ['wOlIt] beat [bi:t] entreat [In'tri:t]

'Alas!' cried the Star-Child, 'I have but one piece of money in my wallet, and if I bring it not to my master he will beat me, for I am his slave.'

But the leper entreated him, and prayed of him, till the Star-Child had pity, and gave him the piece of white gold.

And when he came to the Magician's house (и когда он пришел к дому Волшебника), the Magician opened to him (и Волшебник открыл ему дверь), and brought him in (и впустил его; to bring (brought) in — вводить), and said to him, 'Hast thou the piece of white gold (есть ли у тебя монета из белого золота; hast thou = have you)?'

And the Star-Child answered (а Звездный Мальчик ответил), 'I have it not (у меня ее нет).' So the Magician fell upon him (тогда Волшебник набросился на него; to fall (fell, fallen) upon smb. — нападать, набрасываться на кого-либо), and beat him (и бил его), and set before him an empty trencher (и поставил перед ним пустой поднос), and said, 'Eat,' and an empty cup (и пустую чашку), and said, 'Drink,' and flung him again into the dungeon (и снова бросил его в темницу; to fling (flung) — метать, бросать, швырять).

magician [mq'dZIS(q)n] brought [brO:t] dungeon ['dAndZqn]

And when he came to the Magician's house, the Magician opened to him, and brought him in, and said to him, 'Hast thou the piece of white gold?' And the Star-Child answered, 'I have it not.' So the Magician fell upon him, and beat him, and set before him an empty trencher, and said, 'Eat,' and an empty cup, and said, 'Drink,' and flung him again into the dungeon.

And on the morrow the Magician came to him (на следующий день Волшебник пришел к нему), and said, 'If to-day thou bringest me not (если сегодня ты не принесешь мне) the piece of yellow gold (монету из желтого золота), I will surely keep thee as my slave (я обязательно оставлю тебя своим рабом; to keep — держать, не возвращать, удерживать), and give thee three hundred stripes (и всыплю тебе три сотни ударов).'

So the Star-Child went to the wood (и вот Звездный Мальчик пошел в лес), and all day long (и целый день) he searched for the piece of yellow gold (он искал монету из желтого золота), but nowhere could he find it (но нигде не мог он найти ее). And at sunset (и на закате солнца) he sat him down (он присел на землю; to sit (sat)) and began to weep (и начал плакать), and as he was weeping (и, пока он плакал) there came to him the little Hare (к нему подошел тот самый маленький Зайчик) that he had rescued from the trap (которого он спас из капкана; to rescue — спасать, избавлять, освобождать).

morrow ['mOrqV] nowhere ['nqVweq] rescue ['reskju:]

And on the morrow the Magician came to him, and said, 'If to-day thou bringest me not the piece of yellow gold, I will surely keep thee as my slave, and give thee three hundred stripes.'

So the Star-Child went to the wood, and all day long he searched for the piece of yellow gold, but nowhere could he find it. And at sunset he sat him down and began to weep, and as he was weeping there came to him the little Hare that he had rescued from the trap.

And the Hare said to him, 'Why art thou weeping (почему ты плачешь; art thou = are you)? And what dost thou seek in the wood (и что ты ищешь в этом лесу; dost thou = do you)?'

And the Star-Child answered (и Звездный Мальчик ответил), 'I am seeking for a piece of yellow gold (я ищу монету из желтого золота) that is hidden here (что спрятана здесь; to hide (hid, hidden) — прятать), and if I find it not (и если я не найду ее) my master will beat me (мой хозяин побьет меня), and keep me as a slave (и оставит меня своим рабом).'

'Follow me (иди за мной; to follow — следовать, идти за кем-либо),' cried the Hare, and it ran through the wood (и побежал по лесу) till it came to a pool of water (пока не добежал до лужицы/озерца с водой). And at the bottom of the pool (и на дне этой самой лужицы; bottom — низ, нижняя часть; дно /моря, реки, озера/) the piece of yellow gold was lying (лежала монета из желтого золота).

answer ['Q:nsq] hidden [hIdn] follow ['fOlqV] piece [pi:s]

And the Hare said to him, 'Why art thou weeping? And what dost thou seek in the wood?'

And the Star-Child answered, 'I am seeking for a piece of yellow gold that is hidden here, and if I find it not my master will beat me, and keep me as a slave.'

'Follow me,' cried the Hare, and it ran through the wood till it came to a pool of water. And at the bottom of the pool the piece of yellow gold was lying.

'How shall I thank thee (как мне отблагодарить тебя)?' said the Star-Child, 'for lo (ведь подумать только)! this is the second time (это уже второй раз) that you have succoured me (когда ты пришел мне на помощь в трудную минуту).'

'Nay, but thou hadst pity on me first (нет, ведь ты же первый сжалился надо мной),' said the Hare, and it ran away swiftly (и проворно убежал прочь).

And the Star-Child took the piece of yellow gold (и Звездный Мальчик взял монету из желтого золота; to take (took, taken)), and put it in his wallet (и положил ее в свою котомку), and hurried to the city (и поспешил к городу; to hurry — спешить, торопиться). But the leper saw him coming (но прокаженный увидел, как тот подходит), and ran to meet him (и побежал ему навстречу: «побежал, чтобы встретить его»), and knelt down (и опустился на колени; to kneel (kneeled, knelt) — становиться на колени, knee — колено) and cried, 'Give me a piece of money (дай мне монету) or I shall die of hunger (или я умру от голода).'

lo [lqV] succour ['sAkq] hurry ['hArI] knelt [nelt]

'How shall I thank thee?' said the Star-Child, 'for lo! this is the second time that you have succoured me.'

'Nay, but thou hadst pity on me first,' said the Hare, and it ran away swiftly.

And the Star-Child took the piece of yellow gold, and put it in his wallet, and hurried to the city. But the leper saw him coming, and ran to meet him, and knelt down and cried, 'Give me a piece of money or I shall die of hunger.'

And the Star-Child said to him, 'I have in my wallet but one piece of yellow gold (у меня в котомке всего одна монета из желтого золота), and if I bring it not to my master (но если я не принесу ее моему хозяину) he will beat me (он побьет меня) and keep me as his slave (и оставит меня своим рабом).'

But the leper entreated him sore (но прокаженный слезно умолял его; sore — сильно, глубоко), so that the Star-Child had pity on him (так что Звездный Мальчик сжалился над ним), and gave him the piece of yellow gold (и отдал ему монету из желтого золота; to give (gave, given)).

And when he came to the Magician's house (и когда он пришел к дому Волшебника; to come (came, come)), the Magician opened to him (и волшебник открыл ему /дверь/), and brought him in (и впустил его; to bring (brought)), and said to him, 'Hast thou the piece of yellow gold (есть ли у тебя монета из желтого золота)?' And the Star-Child said to him, 'I have it not (у меня ее нет).' So the Magician fell upon him (тогда Волшебник набросился на него; to fall (fell, fallen)), and beat him (и бил его), and loaded him with chains (и заковал его в цепи; to load — грузить, нагружать, обременять), and cast him again into the dungeon (и снова бросил его в темницу; to cast (cast) — бросать, швырять).

loaded ['lqVdId] chain [tSeIn] again [q'ge(I)n]

And the Star-Child said to him, 'I have in my wallet but one piece of yellow gold, and if I bring it not to my master he will beat me and keep me as his slave.'

But the leper entreated him sore, so that the Star-Child had pity on him, and gave him the piece of yellow gold.

So the Magician fell upon him, and beat him, and loaded him with chains, and cast him again into the dungeon.

And on the morrow the Magician came to him (и на следующий день Волшебник пришел к нему), and said, 'If to-day thou bringest me the piece of red gold (если сегодня ты принесешь мне монету из красного золота) I will set thee free (я освобожу тебя; free — свободный, вольный), but if thou bringest it not (но если ты не принесешь ее; thou bringest = you bring) I will surely slay thee (я непременно убью тебя).'

So the Star-Child went to the wood (тогда Звездный Мальчик отправился в лес; to go (went, gone)), and all day long (и целый день напролет) he searched for the piece of red gold (он искал монету из красного/червонного золота), but nowhere could he find it (но нигде не мог он найти ее; can (could)). And at evening (вечером) he sat him down and wept (он присел на землю и заплакал; to weep (wept)), and as he was weeping (пока он плакал) there came to him the little Hare (к нему подошел маленький Зайчик).

free [fri:] slay [sleI] weeping ['wi:pIN]

And on the morrow the Magician came to him, and said, 'If to-day thou bringest me the piece of red gold I will set thee free, but if thou bringest it not I will surely slay thee.'

So the Star-Child went to the wood, and all day long he searched for the piece of red gold, but nowhere could he find it. And at evening he sat him down and wept, and as he was weeping there came to him the little Hare.

And the Hare said to him, 'The piece of red gold that thou seekest (монета из красного золота, которую ты ищешь; thou seekest = you seek) is in the cavern (находится в пещере) that is behind thee (что позади тебя; thee = you). Therefore weep no more (поэтому не плачь больше) but be glad (и радуйся: «будь довольным/радостным»).'

'How shall I reward thee (как же мне вознаградить тебя)?' cried the Star-Child, 'for lo (подумать только)! this is the third time (это уже третий раз) thou hast succoured me (когда ты приходишь ко мне на помощь в трудную минуту).'

'Nay, but thou hadst pity on me first (ты первым сжалился надо мной),' said the Hare, and it ran away swiftly (и быстро убежал прочь).

And the Hare said to him, 'The piece of red gold that thou seekest is in the cavern that is behind thee. Therefore weep no more but be glad.'

'How shall I reward thee?' cried the Star-Child, 'for lo! this is the third time thou hast succoured me.'

'Nay, but thou hadst pity on me first,' said the Hare, and it ran away swiftly.

And the Star-Child entered the cavern (и Звездный Мальчик вошел в пещеру), and in its farthest corner (и в самом дальнем ее уголке; far — далекий, дальний, farthest — самый дальний, удаленный) he found the piece of red gold (он нашел монету из красного золота; to find (found)). So he put it in his wallet (тогда он положил ее в свою котомку), and hurried to the city (и поспешил к городу). And the leper seeing him coming (и прокаженный, видя, что он идет), stood in the centre of the road (встал посреди дороги; to stand (stood); centre — центр, середина), and cried out (и вскричал), and said to him, 'Give me the piece of red money (отдай мне монету из красного золота: «из красных денег»), or I must die (или я умру: «я должен умереть»),' and the Star-Child had pity on him again (и Звездный Мальчик снова сжалился над ним), and gave him the piece of red gold (и отдал ему монету из красного золота; to give (gave, given)), saying, 'Thy need is greater than mine (твоя нужда больше моей).' Yet was his heart heavy (все же на сердце у него было тяжело), for he knew (потому что он знал; to know (knew, known)) what evil fate awaited him (какая злая судьба/участь ожидала его; to await — ждать, предстоять).

farthest ['fQ:DIst] centre ['sentq] money ['mAnI] heavy ['hevI]

And the Star-Child entered the cavern, and in its farthest corner he found the piece of red gold. So he put it in his wallet, and hurried to the city. And the leper seeing him coming, stood in the centre of the road, and cried out, and said to him, 'Give me the piece of red money, or I must die,' and the Star-Child had pity on him again, and gave him the piece of red gold, saying, 'Thy need is greater than mine.' Yet was his heart heavy, for he knew what evil fate awaited him.

But lo (но, подумать только)! as he passed through the gate of the city (когда он прошел сквозь ворота города), the guards bowed down (стражники склонились; to bow — кланяться, преклоняться) and made obeisance to him (в почтительном поклоне перед ним: «и почтительно поклонились ему»; obeisance — почтительный поклон, реверанс), saying, 'How beautiful is our lord (как прекрасен наш Господин/Владыка)!' and a crowd of citizens followed him (и толпа горожан следовала за ним; citizen — гражданин, городской житель), and cried out (и восклицала), 'Surely there is none so beautiful (несомненно, нет никого настолько же прекрасного) in the whole world (во всем мире)!' so that the Star-Child wept (так что Звездный Мальчик заплакал), and said to himself (и сказал про себя), 'They are mocking me (они насмехаются надо мной), and making light of my misery (и не воспринимают серьезно мои страдания/мучения; to make light of smth. — недооценивать что-либо, относиться к чему-либо несерьезно, пренебрежительно).' And so large was the concourse of the people (стечение народа было настолько огромным), that he lost the threads of his way (что он заблудился: «потерял нити своего пути»; to lose (lost), thread — нитка, нить), and found himself at last (и в конце концов очутился) in a great square (на огромной площади; square — квадрат; площадь), in which there was a palace of a King (на которой стоял дворец Короля).

And so large was the concourse of the people, that he lost the threads of his way, and found himself at last in a great square, in which there was a palace of a King.
