Once the Chief came to inspect the line.	Проезжал раз начальник дистанции путь осматривать.
Three days later important personages were coming from St. Petersburg and would pass over the line. They were conducting an inquiry, so that previous to their journey it was necessary to put everything in order.	Через три дня после того господа важные из Петербурга должны были по дороге проехать: ревизию делали, так перед их проездом все надо было в порядок привести.
Ballast was laid down, the bed was levelled, the sleepers carefully examined, spikes driven in a bit, nuts screwed up, posts painted, and orders given for yellow sand to be sprinkled at the level crossings.	Балласту подсыпали, подровняли, шпалы пересмотрели, костыли подколотили, гайки подвинтили, столбы подкрасили, на переездах приказали желтого песочку подсыпать.
The woman at the neighbouring hut turned her old man out to weed.	Соседка-сторожиха и старика своего выгнала травку подщипать.
Semyon worked for a whole week. He put everything in order, mended his kaftan, cleaned and polished his brass plate until it fairly shone.	Работал Семен целую неделю; все в исправность привел и на себе кафтан починил, вычистил, а бляху медную кирпичом до сияния оттер.
Vasily also worked hard.	Работал и Василий.
The Chief arrived on a trolley, four men working the handles and the levers making the six wheels hum. The trolley travelled at twenty versts an hour, but the wheels squeaked.	Приехал начальник дистанции на дрезине; четверо рабочих рукоять вертят; шестерни жужжат; мчится тележка верст по двадцать в час, только колеса воют.
It reached Semyon's hut, and he ran out and reported in soldierly fashion.	Подлетел к Семеновой будке; подскочил Семен, отрапортовал по-солдатски.
All appeared to be in repair.	Все в исправности оказалось.
"Have you been here long?" inquired the Chief.	- Ты давно здесь? - спрашивает начальник.
"Since the second of May, your Excellency."	- Со второго мая, ваше благородие.
"All right.	- Ладно.

And who is at hut No. 164?"	А в сто шестьдесят четвертом номере кто?
The traffic inspector (he was travelling with the Chief on the trolley) replied:	Дорожный мастер (вместе с ним на дрезине ехал) ответил:
"Vasily Spiridov."	- Василий Спиридов.
"Spiridov, Spiridov...	- Спиридов, Спиридов...
Ah! is he the man against whom you made a note last year?"	А, это тот самый, что в прошлом году был у вас на замечании?
"He is."	- Он самый и есть-с.
"Well, we will see Vasily Spiridov.	- Ну, ладно, посмотрим Василия Спиридова.
Go on!"	Трогай.

The workmen laid to the handles, and the trolley got under way.	Налегли рабочие на рукояти; пошла дрезина в ход.
Semyon watched it, and thought,	Смотрит Семен на нее и думает:
"There will be trouble between them and my neighbour."	"Ну, будет у них с соседом игра".
About two hours later he started on his round.	Часа через два пошел он в обход.
He saw some one coming along the line from the cutting. Something white showed on his head.	Видит, из выемки по полотну идет кто-то, на голове будто белое что виднеется.
Semyon began to look more attentively. It was Vasily. He had a stick in his hand, a small bundle on his shoulder, and his cheek was bound up in a handkerchief.	Стал Семен присматриваться - Василий; в руке палка, за плечами узелок маленький, щека платком завязана.
"Where are you off to?" cried Semyon.	- Сосед, куда собрался? - кричит Семен.
Vasily came quite close. He was very pale, white as chalk, and his eyes had a wild look. Almost choking, he muttered:	Подошел Василий совсем близко: лица на нем нету, белый, как мел, глаза дикие; говорить начал - голос обрывается.
"To town--to Moscow--to the head office."	- В город, - говорит, - в Москву... в правление.
"Head office?	- В правление...
Ah, you are going to complain, I suppose.	Вот что! Жаловаться, стало быть, идешь?
Give it up! Vasily Stepanych, forget it."	Брось, Василий Степаныч, забудь...
"No, mate, I will not forget.	- Нет, брат, не забуду.
It is too late.	Поздно забывать.
See! He struck me in the face, drew blood.	Видишь, он меня в лицо ударил, в кровь разбил.
So long as I live I will not forget. I will not leave it like this!"	Пока жив, не забуду, не оставлю так. Учить их надо, кровопийцев...
Semyon took his hand.	Взял его за руку Семен:
"Give it up, Stepanych. I am giving you good advice. You will not better things..."	- Оставь, Степаныч, верно тебе говорю: лучше не сделаешь.
"Better things!	- Чего там лучше!
I know myself I shan't better things. You were right about Fate.	Знаю сам, что лучше не сделаю; правду ты про талан-судьбу говорил.
It would be better for me not to do it, but one must stand up for the right."	Себе лучше не сделаю, но за правду надо, брат, стоять.
"But tell me, how did it happen?"	- Да ты скажи, с чего все пошло-то?
"How?	- Да с чего...
He examined everything, got down from the trolley, looked into the hut.	Осмотрел все, с дрезины сошел, в будку заглянул.
I knew beforehand that he would be strict, and so I had put everything into proper order.	Я уж знал, что строго будет спрашивать; все как следует исправил.
He was just going when I made my complaint.	Ехать уж хотел, а я с жалобой.

He immediately cried out:	Он сейчас кричать.
'Here is a Government inquiry coming, and you make a complaint about a vegetable garden.	"Тут, говорит, правительственная ревизия, такой-сякой, а ты об огороде жалобы подавать!
Here are privy councillors coming, and you annoy me with cabbages!'	Тут, говорит, тайные советники, а ты с капустой лезешь!"
I lost patience and said something--not very much, but it offended him, and he struck me in the face.	Я не стерпел, слово сказал, не то чтобы очень, но так уж ему обидно показалось. Как даст он мне... Терпенье наше проклятое!
I stood still; I did nothing, just as if what he did was perfectly all right.	Тут бы его надо... а я стою себе, будто так оно и следует.
They went off; I came to myself, washed my face, and left."	Уехали они, опамятовался я, вот обмыл себе лицо и пошел.
"And what about the hut?"	- Как же будка-то?
"My wife is staying there.	- Жена осталась.
She will look after things. Never mind about their roads."	Не прозевает; да ну их совсем и с дорогой ихней!
Vasily got up and collected himself.	Встал Василий, собрался.
"Good-bye, Ivanov.	- Прощай, Иваныч.
I do not know whether I shall get any one at the office to listen to me."	Не знаю, найду ли управу себе.
"Surely you are not going to walk?"	- Неужто пешком пойдешь?
"At the station I will try to get on a freight train, and to-morrow I shall be in Moscow."	- На станции на товарный попрошусь: завтра в Москве буду.
The neighbours bade each other farewell. Vasily was absent for some time.	Простились соседи; ушел Василий, и долго его не было.
His wife worked for him night and day. She never slept, and wore herself out waiting for her husband.	Жена за него работала, день и ночь не спала; извелась совсем, поджидаючи мужа.
On the third day the commission arrived. An engine, luggage-van, and two first-class saloons; but Vasily was still away.	На третий день проехала ревизия: паровоз, вагон багажный и два первого класса, а Василия все нет.
Semyon saw his wife on the fourth day. Her face was swollen from crying and her eyes were red.	На четвертый день увидел Семен его хозяйку: лицо от слез пухлое, глаза красные.
"Has your husband returned?" he asked.	- Вернулся муж? - спрашивает.
But the woman only made a gesture with her hands, and without saying a word went her way.	Махнула баба рукой, ничего не сказала и пошла в свою сторону. -----------
Semyon had learnt when still a lad to make flutes out of a kind of reed.	Научился Семен когда-то, еще мальчишкой, из тальника дудки делать.
He used to burn out the heart of the stalk, make holes where necessary, drill them, fix a mouthpiece at one end, and tune them so well that it was possible to play almost any air on them.	Выжжет таловой палке сердце, дырки, где надо, высверлит, на конце пищик сделает и так славно наладит, что хоть что угодно играй.

He made a number of them in his spare time, and sent them by his friends amongst the freight brakemen to the bazaar in the town. He got two kopeks apiece for them.	Делывал он в досужее время дудок много и с знакомым товарным кондуктором в город на базар отправлял; давали ему там за штуку по две копейки.
On the day following the visit of the commission he left his wife at home to meet the six o'clock train, and started off to the forest to cut some sticks.	На третий день после ревизии оставил он дома жену вечерний шестичасовой поезд встретить, а сам взял ножик и в лес пошел, палок себе нарезать.
He went to the end of his section--at this point the line made a sharp turn-descended the embankment, and struck into the wood at the foot of the mountain.	Дошел он до конца своего участка, - на этом месте путь круто поворачивал, - спустился с насыпи и пошел лесом под гору.
About half a verst away there was a big marsh, around which splendid reeds for his flutes grew.	За полверсты было большое болото, и около него отличнейшие кусты для его дудок росли.
He cut a whole bundle of stalks and started back home.	Нарезал он палок целый пук и пошел домой.
The sun was already dropping low, and in the dead stillness only the twittering of the birds was audible, and the crackle of the dead wood under his feet.	Идет лесом; солнце уже низко было; тишина мертвая, слышно только, как птицы чиликают да валежник под ногами хрустит.
As he walked along rapidly, he fancied he heard the clang of iron striking iron, and he redoubled his pace.	Прошел Семен немного еще, скоро полотно; и чудится ему, что-то еще слышно: будто где-то железо о железо позвякивает. Пошел Семен скорей.
There was no repair going on in his section.	Ремонту в то время на их участке не было.
What did it mean?	"Что бы это значило?" - думает.
He emerged from the woods, the railway embankment stood high before him; on the top a man was squatting on the bed of the line busily engaged in something. Semyon commenced quietly to crawl up towards him. He thought it was some one after the nuts which secure the rails.	Выходит он на опушку - перед ним железнодорожная насыпь подымается; наверху, на полотне, человек сидит на корточках, что-то делает; стал подыматься Семен потихоньку к нему: думал, гайки кто воровать пришел.
He watched, and the man got up, holding a crow-bar in his hand. He had loosened a rail, so that it would move to one side.	Смотрит - и человек поднялся, в руках у него лом; поддел он рельс ломом, как двинет его в сторону.
A mist swam before Semyon's eyes; he wanted to cry out, but could not.	Потемнело у Семена в глазах; крикнуть хочет - не может.
It was Vasily! Semyon scrambled up the bank, as Vasily with crow-bar and wrench slid headlong down the other side.	Видит он Василия, бежит бегом, а тот с ломом и ключом с другой стороны насыпи кубарем катится.
"Vasily Stepanych!	- Василий Степаныч!
My dear friend, come back!	Отец родной, голубчик, воротись!
Give me the crow-bar.	Дай лом!
We will put the rail back; no one will know.	Поставим рельс, никто не узнает.
Come back! Save your soul from sin!"	Воротись, спаси свою душу от греха.
Vasily did not look back, but disappeared into the woods.	Не обернулся Василий, в лес ушел.

Semyon stood before the rail which had been torn up. He threw down his bundle of sticks.	Стоит Семен над отвороченным рельсом, палки свои выронил.
A train was due; not a freight, but a passenger-train.	Поезд идет не товарный, пассажирский.
And he had nothing with which to stop it, no flag.	И не остановишь его ничем: флага нет.
He could not replace the rail and could not drive in the spikes with his bare hands.	Рельса на место не поставишь; голыми руками костылей не забьешь.
It was necessary to run, absolutely necessary to run to the hut for some tools.	Бежать надо, непременно бежать в будку за каким-нибудь припасом.
"God help me!" he murmured.	Господи, помоги!
Semyon started running towards his hut.	Бежит Семен к своей будке, задыхается.
He was out of breath, but still ran, falling every now and then.	Бежит - вот-вот упадет.
He had cleared the forest; he was only a few hundred feet from his hut, not more, when he heard the distant hooter of the factory sound--six o'clock!	Выбежал из лесу - до будки "со сажен, не больше, осталось, слышит - на фабрике гудок загудел. Шесть часов.
In two minutes' time No. 7 train was due.	А в две минуты седьмого поезд пройдет.
"Oh, Lord!	Господи!
Have pity on innocent souls!"	Спаси невинные души!
In his mind Semyon saw the engine strike against the loosened rail with its left wheel, shiver, careen, tear up and splinter the sleepers--and just there, there was a curve and the embankment seventy feet high, down which the engine would topple--and the third-class carriages would be packed ... little children...	Так и видит перед собою Семен: хватит паровоз левым колесом об рельсовый обруб, дрогнет, накренится, пойдет шпалы рвать и вдребезги бить, а тут кривая, закругление, да насыпь, да валиться-то вниз одиннадцать сажен, а там, в третьем классе, народу битком набито, дети малые...
All sitting in the train now, never dreaming of danger.	Сидят они теперь все, ни о чем не думают.
"Oh, Lord! Tell me what to do!...	Господи, вразуми ты меня!..
No, it is impossible to run to the hut and get back in time."	Нет, до будки добежать и назад вовремя вернуться не поспеешь...
Semyon did not run on to the hut, but turned back and ran faster than before.	Не добежал Семен до будки, повернул назад, побежал скорее прежнего.
He was running almost mechanically, blindly; he did not know himself what was to happen.	Бежит почти без памяти; сам не знает, что еще будет.
He ran as far as the rail which had been pulled up; his sticks were lying in a heap.	Добежал до отвороченного рельса: палки его кучей лежат.
He bent down, seized one without knowing why, and ran on farther.	Нагнулся он, схватил одну, сам не понимая зачем, дальше побежал.
It seemed to him the train was already coming.	Чудится ему, что уже поезд идет.
He heard the distant whistle; he heard the quiet, even tremor of the rails; but his strength was exhausted, he could run no farther, and came to a halt about six hundred feet from the awful spot. Then an idea came into his head, literally like a ray of light.	Слышит свисток далекий, слышит, рельсы мерно и потихоньку подрагивать начали. Бежать дальше сил нету; остановился он от страшного места саженях во ста: тут ему точно светом голову осветило.

Pulling off his cap, he took out of it a cotton scarf, drew his knife out of the upper part of his boot, and crossed himself, muttering, "God bless me!"	Снял он шапку, вынул из нее платок бумажный; вынул нож из-за голенища; перекрестился, господи благослови!
He buried the knife in his left arm above the elbow; the blood spurted out, flowing in a hot stream. In this he soaked his scarf, smoothed it out, tied it to the stick and hung out his red flag.	Ударил себя ножом в левую руку повыше локтя, брызнула кровь, полила горячей струей; намочил он в ней свой платок, расправил, растянул, навязал на палку и выставил свой красный флаг.
He stood waving his flag. The train was already in sight.	Стоит, флагом своим размахивает, а поезд уж виден.
The driver would not see him--would come close up, and a heavy train cannot be pulled up in six hundred feet.	Не видит его машинист, подойдет близко, а на ста саженях не остановить тяжелого поезда!
And the blood kept on flowing. Semyon pressed the sides of the wound together so as to close it, but the blood did not diminish. Evidently he had cut his arm very deep.	А кровь все льет и льет; прижимает рану к боку, хочет зажать ее, но не унимается кровь; видно, глубоко поранил он руку.
His head commenced to swim, black spots began to dance before his eyes, and then it became dark.	Закружилось у него в голове, в глазах черные мухи залетали; потом и совсем потемнело; в ушах звон колокольный.
There was a ringing in his ears. He could not see the train or hear the noise. Only one thought possessed him.	Не видит он поезда и не слышит шума: одна мысль в голове:
"I shall not be able to keep standing up. I shall fall and drop the flag; the train will pass over me. Help me, oh Lord!"	"Не устою, упаду, уроню флаг; пройдет поезд через меня... помоги, господи, пошли смену..."
All turned black before him, his mind became a blank, and he dropped the flag; but the blood-stained banner did not fall to the ground. A hand seized it and held it high to meet the approaching train.	И стало черно в глазах его и пусто в душе его, и выронил он флаг. Но не упало кровавое знамя на землю: чья-то рука подхватила его и подняла высоко навстречу подходящему поезду.
The engineer saw it, shut the regulator, and reversed steam.	Машинист увидел его, закрыл регулятор и дал контрпар.
The train came to a standstill.	Поезд остановился.
People jumped out of the carriages and collected in a crowd.	Выскочили из вагонов люди, сбились толпою.
They saw a man lying senseless on the footway, drenched in blood, and another man standing beside him with a blood-stained rag on a stick.	Видят: лежит человек весь в крови, без памяти; другой возле него стоит с кровавой тряпкой на палке.
Vasily looked around at all. Then, lowering his head, he said:	Обвел Василий всех глазами, опустил голову:
"Bind me. I tore up a rail!"	- Вяжите меня, - говорит, - я рельс отворотил.
